Blog
English name derives from "web log". Originally used as a teenagers’ diary and stereotyped as such. Today blogs are written by politicians, journalists, industry experts, and companies - due to the fact that this tool allows a direct contact and exchanges of opinion with others and building a community of readers.
Blog aggregator
A service which creates a directory of blogs, and collects new entries appearing in the blogs. For a blog to be added, it must be submitted the blogger to the site’s administrators (and in some cases, wait for the verification of other bloggers who are already in the system), and post a special code on his website. Through blogs’ aggregators it is possible to advertise on blogs or ordering posts sponsored by the owners of blogs themes.
Blogs and forums search engine
Type of Internet search engine specialized in searching of blogs and forums. It does not have advanced information management capabilities such as archiving, statistics and reports.
Content aggregator
This tool allows you to download content from a variety of websites, which have their own RSS feeds.
Information aggregator
News service, bringing the most popular news together. These services make also possible to add new information by their users, and evaluate the added articles. American example is Digg and Polish Wykop.
Information search engine
Type of Internet search engine specialized in searching and downloading of information limited only to some information portals. Polish example is NetSprint Donosiciel, American – Google News.
Internet community
Is an integrated group of people interested in the same subject. Communities can be formed for example around blogs, brands, and thematic forums on the web.
Internet Monitoring
A type of media monitoring beside press, radio and television monitoring. Due to the increase in the number of Polish Internet users and development of websites, monitoring the Internet becomes more and more important. It is also important, because of the fast spread of information in the network.
Microblog
Shorter version of a blog (note has a character restriction up to 70 or 160 characters). It is an intermediate between blog and SMS message. In the U.S. Twitter is a very popular application, also used in the business communications - celebrities, politicians or brands have their Twitter accounts. Polish equivalent of the service is called Blip.
Online Forum
Internet tool used for exchange of opinions and discussion between users. As a system of comments to articles, forums function on all major Internet portals. Forums can be created by the Internet users on their private servers.
Sites with audio and video files
Services, which include audio and video content are created by the Internet users or derive from other sources (for example, commercial music videos). Some companies use them as an additional channel for communication with their customers by publishing their advertising content.
Social bookmarking (tagging) services
This allows collecting of favorite bookmarks - favorites (sharing the bookmarks with others) on the external account, which can be accessed from various computers. An example is the U.S. Delicious.com and Polish Linkologia.pl.
Social Networking Site
Internet service which enables to create users’ own database of contacts, networking and exchange of information among users. In Poland, the most popular service of this type is nasza-klasa.pl, while business sites: Profeo.pl and GoldenLine.pl (in the United States: Facebook, LinkedIn).
Web 2.0
It is defined as the technology and tools that enable the average Internet user to create their own content (which was not possible in the first stage of development of the Internet, where content could only be created by users with a higher level of competence). The aims of this technology are: making it easy to create your own content, interactivity, the possibility of mutual exchange of information and knowledge sharing, integration, the ability to create a network of contacts. Tools created by Web 2.0 technologies are: social networking, blogs, websites that contain images, audio clips and video, interactive radio stations, websites created for sharing your favorite bookmarks, information aggregators, and content aggregators.
Web 3.0
This term describes the further evolution of the Internet's model as a broader database. This concept of processing the content of pages with the pattern that is read not only by the browser, but also other applications, systems that use artificial intelligence, semantic and software solutions for the visualization and processing of data in three dimensions.
