The cross before the Presidential Palace was set by scouts shortly after the plane crash near Smolensk on 10th April, 2010. In the first days after the crash, people who wanted to commemorate the victims, gathered by the cross. The moving of the cross to the nearby St. Anna’s Church was planned on August, 3rd, 2010 by the scouts, the curia and politicians. But some of the people gathered by the cross did not allowed to do so. Their argument was, that the cross should be moved only when the monument commemorating the victims of the crash will be built there. The director of the President’s Chancellery decided to leave the cross at the current place and since then the pavement before the Palace become the meeting place of the advocates for the leaving the cross and advocates of moving it.
